Connie Moreau curled herself into a ball in the middle of her bed and cried. She'd been crying for hours, but still the tears fell. It was supposed to have been a happy day. Their one year anniversary. And yet, here she was, not even 10pm, crying on her bed. She'd thought he'd changed. Thought he loved her, even.

Suddenly, she was shaken from her crying by the vibrating of her cell phone on her bedside table. Sniffling, she picked it up, only to throw it back onto the table when she saw his name in the display, indicating a text message. Burying her head in her arms once more, a fresh wave of tears falling.

Persistently her cell phone vibrated once, twice, three more times. With a cry of annoyance, she picked the phone up once again and flipped it open. Scrolling through the messages, she wasn't surprised by what she found.

Connie, baby, I'm sorry. reads the first one. Just as she expected.

Please, babe, I love you. reads the second. Still not a surprise.

The third one, however, was more surprising. Cons, I'm so, so sorry. I should have told you the truth. Please come over. I have something to explain.

Intrigued, Connie sent a quick reply to say she was on her way and that he'd better make it a good explanation or she won't be staying long, and went into the bathroom. Splashing cool water on her face, she washed and reapplied her makeup. She certainly didn't want him to know she'd been crying pretty much nonstop since she'd walked out of the restaurant he was supposed to meet her at.

Exiting the bathroom, she found another message on her phone. You won't be sorry, I promise. x Rolling her eyes slightly, she put her phone in her bag and picked up her keys. Climbing into her Ford pickup truck, she drove the few minutes to his place, praying that she wasn't making a mistake.

Reaching the front door, she was surprised to find a note taped to it.

Connie. Come in, the door's unlocked. Go through to the dining room, but don't turn on any lights. I promise it will be worth it. x

Frowning, she peeled the note from the door, and followed it's instructions. As she opened the door, she was surprised to find the house mostly in darkness, except for the soft light of a few strategically placed candles to light her path. Puzzled, she made her way through the house to the dining room, where she was met by a sight that left her breathless. The dining room was bathed in the soft, flickering glow of what seemed like a million candles. The table was set out beautifully with two place settings.

"You came," a soft voice startled Connie from her thoughts and she looked around to find it's source.

"Dean..." she breathed, taking a step towards him before stopping. "This is...you have some explaining to do," she said, changing her mind. He was always good at distracting her when she was angry, and it seemed that this time was no different.

He nodded, looking abashed. "Please, sit down and I'll explain," he said, pulling out a chair for Connie to sit on.

"Alright. But this better be good," she said warningly, sitting down on the offered chair.

Instead of sitting down opposite her, as she expected, he knelt down in front of her and took her hand. "Connie, I'm so sorry that I left you at that restaurant. No, please don't interrupt," he started, silencing her as she opened her mouth to speak. "I really am. If I'd known you would think that, I would have told you the truth, but I wanted it to be a surprise," he continued, one hand fumbling in the pocket of his suit jacket.

"Then what is the truth, Dean?" Connie asked softly, frowning at her boyfriend. He hadn't really explained anything.

"The truth is...Connie, will you marry me?" he asked, finally finding the ring box in his pocket and opening it to present to Connie. "I should have planned it better, but I wanted it to be a complete surprise and I thought Julie would tell you," he explained, looking up at Connie from his position on the floor, hopefully. "So...what do you say?"

Connie's hands had flown to her mouth and tears were once again sparkling in her eyes. But this were tears of happiness. "Oh Dean...yes! Yes, I'll marry you!" she exclaimed, holding out her hand so that he could place the ring - a solid gold band with a brilliant amethyst stone - on her finger. In her anger at the thought he'd forgotten their anniversary, she'd forgotten exactly how romantic Dean Portman could be.
